Blog EntryModel dies in fall from NYC building Jun 29, '08 1:50 AM

NEW YORK - A European Vogue cover model fell to her death from her Manhattan apartment building Saturday in an apparent suicide, published reports said.

Ruslana Korshunova, 20, died around 2:30 p.m. in a fall from a building on Water Street, in Manhattan's Financial District, The New York Post, the Daily News and Newsday reported. The newspapers cited unnamed officials and police.

Police said the fall was under investigation. Korushnova's New York agency and a spokeswoman for medical examiners did not immediately return telephone messages.

Originally from the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan, the almond-eyed, flowing-haired Korshunova appeared in advertisements and on runways for such designers as Marc Jacobs, Nina Ricci and DKNY. British Vogue hailed her as "a face to be excited about" in 2005.

Her break came when modeling booker Debbie Jones noticed her while perusing an in-flight magazine article about Korushnova's hometown of Almaty, according to the Vogue report.

"She looked like something out of a fairytale!" Jones told the magazine. "We had to find her and we searched high and low until we did!"

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Speed has been Manny Pacquiao's specialty ever since he was a scrawny 106-pound teenage brawler. When he stepped in the ring weighing 135 pounds on Saturday night, even his trainer wondered whether Pacquiao would lose some of his splendid speed with all that extra bulk.

That theory evaporated with one look at David Diaz's lacerated, bloody face, even before it hit the canvas in the ninth round. Not only did Pacquiao keep his pace while winning the WBC lightweight title with a ninth-round knockout, he got stronger along the way.

What a frightening thought for the rest of the talented lightweight division.

"I feel much, much stronger and more powerful at 135," said Pacquiao, the first Asian boxer to win title belts at four weights. "This is where I plan to stay. I did real well. I was really surprised it wasn't stopped sooner."

After winning a recognized championship fight at his fifth weight — including a nontitle victory over 126-pound king Marco Antonio Barrera in 2003 — Pacquiao (47-3-2, 35 KOs) definitely has the credentials to qualify as boxing's mythical pound-for-pound champion.

His lightweight debut at the Mandalay Bay Events Center was every bit as action-packed as his long history of brawls at lower weights — and like most of Pac-Man's victims, Diaz (34-2-1) just couldn't keep that ferocious pace.

Pacquiao was relentless with his right hook, apparently capitalizing on something seen by trainer Freddie Roach in Diaz's defense.

"It was his speed," said Diaz, the game but overmatched champion. "It was all his speed. I could see the punches perfectly, but he was just too fast. He boxed me more than I thought he was going to box. I said to Freddie, 'It's the best I've ever seen him box.' Freddie said, 'Me too. That was our game plan.'"

Three months ago, Juan Manuel Marquez stretched Pacquiao to the limit before losing a split decision in the same ring in perhaps the year's best bout so far. Pacquiao took much less punishment this time while winning every round on every judge's scorecard, but Diaz was remarkably tenacious in the face of nonstop attacks — until Pacquiao sneaked home a left hand that dropped Diaz to the canvas.

Diaz, the likable but unlikely champion from Chicago, knew he faced long odds — 4-to-1 at fight time — in his second title defense. The former U.S. Olympian hung in despite severe cuts and weary legs that wobbled with each of Pacquiao's big punches.

"His punches are just too fast," Diaz told his corner after the sixth round.

Diaz's face was dripping blood by then, and both fighters' white trunks were shaded pink by the eighth, when Pacquiao battered Diaz relentlessly. After Pacquiao's decisive punch in the ninth, referee Vic Drakulich stopped the bout before even counting to 10.

Pacquiao tugged on Diaz's arm in compassion before leaping onto the ropes in celebration.

Pacquiao threw 788 punches to Diaz's 463, also landing 10 percent more of his blows. Pacquiao jabbed well, with remarkable discipline for an instinctual brawler, but Diaz was hurt most by the 180 power shots that connected.

Pacquiao started fighting as a scrawny 16-year-old in the Philippines, but he grew into a dynamic competitor who won world titles at 112, 122 and 130 pounds. Few of those victories gave Roach more pleasure than this disciplined effort.

"That was beautiful," Roach said. "The game plan was not to stand and trade, because Diaz is too dangerous. The plan was to go in and out, outbox him, do what Manny does best. He did everything that we asked him to do."

Some think Pacquiao's next move could be to bulk up five more pounds for a wildly lucrative fight with England's most popular plugger, Ricky Hatton. Pacquiao seems more likely to stick around to fight other lightweights — perhaps 130-pound champion Edwin Valero or Humberto Soto, who lost a curious disqualification Saturday in an undercard bout.

"I can fight in November," Pacquiao said. "Who I fight is the job of my promoter (Bob Arum)."

Pacquiao has made his career on a series of exciting brawls with the best Mexican fighters of the post-Julio Cesar Chavez era, going 5-1-1 against Barrera, Erik Morales and Marquez, who lost a supermodel-thin split decision to Pacquiao last March.

Meanwhile, Diaz has made a career out of defying meager expectations, starting with two surprising victories over Zab Judah for a spot on the 1996 U.S. Olympic team. After quitting the sport for nearly two years early in this decade, Diaz earned his title nearly two years ago in a stunning 10th-round knockout of Jose Armando Santa Cruz.

Mandalay Bay was filled largely with Filipino fans, including an overly optimistic man whose sign read, "Pac-Man, Marry Me!"

Blog EntryTapping the Creative Universe by Apo Jim ParedesJan 31, '08 9:27 AM
for everyone

I am cross-posting Apo Jim's notice to our TCU alumni egroup.  I found his course very helpful in unblocking things, real and imaginary, that were hindering my creative expression.  The course is intended for artists but I guess would work just as well for anybody experiencing creative and other blocks.

Here's a few questions we should all ask ourselves at this time in our lives.

- Do you want a new experience this 2008 or would you like it to be just like the past years you've been living?

- Do you want to (FINALLY) get over past experiences, attitudes and beliefs that have bogged you down in the past and start living with joy and power?

- Would you like to learn and acquire life-long tools that will help you unblock your creativity, and keep you unblocked for life?

- Do you want to totally amaze yourself in a great, positive, fantastic way this 2008?

That would be nice, wouldn't it? In fact, it would be more than nice, it would be GREAT! If you answered yes to all or any of the questions, it's time to invest in yourself and experience the best of who you can be.

I have worked together with Illac in our alumni association and I have found him to be always thinking of projects for other people; specially people who needed simple things but which were beyond their reach.  This time, he is reaching out for help for his father.  Please assist where you can.  Thanks, julles

I have never learned to ask things for helping other people. That's why it has always been a self sustaining business to alleviate poverty in the seafarer's center or in building earthen schools for the rural areas. I never learned how to open my hands to request help.

However today, it is different. My father has had a heart attack and is in need of blood, Type A+. It would be wonderful if someone out there could contact us and help our family in this time of need.

Joking aside, Dangerous October Boys is a lovely looking and oftimes moving film about coming of age comparable in some ways to Rob Reiner's classic Stand By Me, but minus the dead body on the railway tracks. Chi and his mates, the "October boys" of the title (because nobody knows their actual birthdates, their honorary birthdays are in October), live at a Catholic orphanage in the South Las Pinas outback, but are given the chance to spend the summer at the seaside thanks to a church benefactor and his wife. For the four lads nicknamed Julles (Radcliffe), Chi, Rodney and Ms. Latvia this is a rare chance to experience a taste of freedom away from the scary, evil nuns (I'm sorry, but they freak me out almost as much as clowns). And it's a paradise, complete with a beautiful French woman who swims topless and a wild black stallion that catches fish. The three younger boys spend much of their time trying to impress a young, childless couple that they believe wants to adopt one of them, while Harry... sorry, Julles... spends his time getting his wand away with a local girl.

Even though Dangerous October Boys features, among other things disease, lost love and piscine death, it manages to be terribly nice about everything. We’re talking Sunday afternoon tea and Antiques Roadshow nice. And this lack of any real bite makes it, frankly, a bit dull. It really could have used a dead body on the railway tracks. What make for great emotive memories in a novel, heightened by the unique connection between author and reader, do not always play out as well on the big screen. No matter how many cartwheeling nuns you have.

Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast, Australia, 16 September 2007 - Maddison Gabriel, who turned 13 today, was chosen as The Face of the Gold Coast Fashion Week.  Her selection was controversial because of her age.  The organizers though went ahead and presented her to media, wearing an age-appropriate silver evening gown.  She was accompanied by her mother, Michelle, to the VIP function last night.

Apparently, among those who criticized Maddison's selection were PM John Howard and Premier Anna Bligh and some child-protection advocates.

Maddison was quoted as saying, "I look forward to modelling in the future, it's been my dream for a long time."

Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 20 August, 2007: Canon raises the stakes in the professional photography market with the launch of the 21 Megapixel, 5 frame per second EOS-1Ds Mark III. Delivering 14-bit depth resolution from a newly developed 35mm full frame CMOS sensor, Canon’s new flagship digital SLR produces files that convert to over 100MB uncompressed 16-bit TIFF, setting a new benchmark in image resolution and sharpness for 35mm-format digital photography.

As well as producing outstanding colour rendition, Dual DIGIC III processors drive 5 fps continuous shooting for up to 56 Large JPEGs (12 RAW) – unrivalled by any other camera at this resolution. This capacity to shoot such large images uninterrupted is regarded as a big driver in switching studio photographers to the EOS platform.

The EOS-1Ds Mark III inherits the new technology platform introduced earlier this year in the EOS-1D Mark III, including 63-zone exposure metering, 19 cross-type auto focus system, a 3.0” LCD with Live View mode and EOS Integrated Cleaning System. The Highlight Tone Priority function expands dynamic range for more depth and detail in bright areas. The launch is supported with the announcement of Canon’s new ultra wide-angle lens, the Lens 2.

“Taking image quality and versatility to unprecedented levels, the EOS-1Ds Mark III redefines commercial photography conventions”, said Karz Suzuki, Head of Canon Professional Services. “The camera will strengthen Canon’s popularity amongst professional studio photographers. Culminating 20 years of EOS development, the EOS-1Ds Mark III represents a definitive moment in our company’s photographic history.”

Key features

  • 21 Megapixel full frame (35mm) CMOS sensor
  • 5 fps continuous shooting for up to 56 frames
  • Dual “DIGIC III” processors
  • Highlight Tone Priority
  • Auto focus system with 19 cross type sensors and 26 focus assist points
  • EOS Integrated Cleaning System
  • ISO 100-1600 (expandable to L:50 H:3200)
  • 3.0” 230K pixel LCD with Live View mode
  • Redesigned viewfinder now wider and brighter

Image quality

The EOS-1Ds Mark III produces files that exceed the standard resolution requirements of leading agencies and stock libraries. The third generation CMOS sensor incorporates a new pixel design with on-chip noise reduction circuitry to ensure high image quality all the way to ISO 1600. 14 bit A/D converters provide a total colour depth of 16,384 tones per pixel - delivering smoother gradations and more accurate colour reproduction.

The option to expand to H:3200 will be welcomed by professionals working in churches and sensitive situations where the use of flash is not permitted or desired. Where discretion is paramount, a silent drive mode delays shutter re-cocking for as long as the shutter release remains depressed.

Highlight Tone Priority mode gives wedding and landscape photographers the option to boost dynamic range for highlights when shooting above ISO 200 – reproducing more tonal detail from wedding dresses, clouds and other bright objects.

Precision and control

The auto focus system includes 19 cross-type sensors with sensitivity up to f/2.8, spread across the AF area to better accommodate off-centre subjects. An additional 26 AF assist points help with AF tracking accuracy.

The control layout includes a dedicated AF-ON button on the back of the camera, allowing users to instantly switch auto focus on when composing. The viewfinder is now brighter with a wider angle of view, while the 63-zone metering system gives photographers a greater degree of control over exposure.

New LCD with Live View

The bright 3.0” LCD monitor provides 230K pixels resolution for precise framing and reviewing. Live View mode displays a real-time image on the LCD, including a selectable grid overlay and a live histogram that simulates image exposure. For the studio environment, remote Live View lets the photographer compose, adjust settings and capture the shot from a PC using the supplied EOS utility software.

New controls and menu

The EOS-1Ds Mark III’s menu incorporates a tab structure that eliminates scrolling for vastly improved readability and ease of use. Improving on previous models, personal settings and custom functions are consolidated into 57 custom functions grouped into four logical categories. Photographers can also now see at a glance any default setting changes. The My Menu option allows photographers to store frequently used settings on a separate menu for immediate access. Settings for recently released accessories such as the Speedlite 580EX II and the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2 can be controlled directly from the LCD. Along with a new dedicated ISO button, ISO is permanently displayed on the top LCD panel.

Reliability

Shutter durability is increased by 50% to 300,000 cycles. A magnesium alloy casing with dust and moisture resistant seals protects the body. The EOS Integrated Cleaning System reduces, repels and removes dust from the sensor to significantly limit the need for manual cleaning. To avoid image loss, a warning alarm sounds if the memory card door is opened while images are still being written.

Connectivity

Interfaces include video out (for display in both NTSC and PAL formats – with the Live View mode ideal for live display to clients during the shoot) and USB 2.0. To prevent the USB cable becoming accidentally dislodged during shooting, a special connection secures it to the camera body.

Compatibility and accessories

As well as full compatibility with all EF lenses and EX Speedlite flashes and accessories, the EOS-1Ds Mark III is supported by the recently released Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2. The WFT-E2 enables secure wireless uploads to FTP servers as well as remote access via HTTP and PTP protocols. The unit also connects wirelessly to external storage media and supports GPS tagging when used with a portable GPS device. For assignments where image protection and authenticity are crucial, the EOS-1Ds Mark III is compatible with the Original Data Security Kit OSK-E3.

New lens

Today’s launch coincides with the release of the EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM: Canon’s new professional L-series ultra wide-angle lens for the photographer requiring a slightly different perspective. As with many L-series lenses and the Speedlite 580EX II, the EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM incorporates environmental sealing to match that of the EOS-1Ds Mark III, creating a fully weatherproof camera system. Aspherical and UD lens elements produce exceptional image quality with improved corner-to-corner sharpness. The ring-type USM delivers fast, silent auto focus with full-time manual focus override. A circular aperture produces pleasing bokeh at wide apertures and Super Spectra coatings suppress ghosting and flare by suppressing internal reflections from lens element and sensor surfaces.

Software

The EOS-1Ds Mark III is packaged with a comprehensive software suite to streamline the photographer’s workflow. This includes Digital Photo Professional (DPP) RAW conversion/processing software for complete RAW image processing control. DPP also integrates with camera features such as the Dust Delete Data and Picture Style. The camera also comes with EOS Utility, ImageBrowser/Zoom Browser and Photostitch.

Blog EntryHong Kong Fashion Week Fair DailyJul 11, '07 11:00 PM
for everyone

12 July 2007, HK Convention and Exhibition Center - The other day, due to time constraints, I was not able to comment on the collections of Ika and Bernard Foong.  The collection of Ika, who is Balinese, I think, featured in the fashion show entitled "Let's Twist Again", with music from chubby Checker, the Beatles and the Beach Boys, captured the summer spirit in her tribute to the '60s with her simple shift dresses in beautiful prints.  The ethic hippie influence was seen in midriff baring (!) skirt, flared pants and cropped tops.  Ika was besieged with flowers from her fans after the show.  By the way,  the Bali Fashion Week is on in 22-25 November in Kuta, Bali.  I will see Ika again there, where she will also mount her fashion show!

Bernard Foong's collection, entitled "Grace", was a homage to femininity if girls really are 'sugar and spice'!  I thank God for femininity throughout the show!  And repeated it like a mantra! The fashion show opened with a film clip showing a nun and a beautiful lady talking about love and grace.  Light, floating print gowns were followed by exquisite confections of party dresses in icecream colours.  Sumptuous bridal gowns threw convention to the winds while embodying pure romance.  The line between glamorous gowns and lingerie became blurred as models surprised the audience by dropping the skirts of the corset-topped dresses!  I used the number and quick succession of camera clicks I hear as gauge of how the photographers like the outfits.  As this point when skirts were dropping all over the runway, I could hardly hear the show music due to the torrent of camera clicks! Oh, pictures, pictures, pictures!

Yesterday, the first fashion show was Samuel Dong's "White and Black". It was literally white all black for the most part, with a splash of tangerine in the end. He showed pants and skirts in various lengths topped by shirts both plain and patterned.  It was business-like (I love this business!), professional collection with strong commercial appeal (I love commerce too!).

Two more fashion shows by the Supreme Corea Artist Association followed, both entitled "Scarf". I could not understand why they were called that since I do not recall seeing any scarf. All the shows were standing-room-only but the Corea Shows were jampacked!  There were a lot of Koreans, to be fair, but also a mixture of Europeans, Americans, Asians and one Filipino photographer! Elegant femininity was in vogue! Thank you Lord for creating women! The first show showcased a variety of day, evening and bridal wear.  The day wear, in black, neutrals and orange, was tailored and chic; the cocktail dresses and evening gowns featured exquisite embroidery.  Bridal gowns were richly embellished with tiers, frills and layers to give an ethereal effect!

The mini fashion parade is one of the features I love about the HK Fashion Fair.  The models used the hallway lobby in front of Exhibition Hall 1 as runway and wear outfits from the display racks of the exhibitors.  Except for one overzealous security guard who kept appearing in my pictures (Hi there Mister!), the event was flawless.

I had a chance to shoot the interviews done by the crew of Fashion TV - Hong Kong and will post the pictures once I am back in Manila.  They will show the footage sometime in the first week of August. You will see models being interviewed at the end of which they'll say something , "Hi!  I am Tessa, I am from America.  I love Fashion TV!" When they asked this one superhot model from Brazil to say the line in her language (Brazilian Portuguese?), she forgot her name!  God is fair!

I was also able to see the display stall of my friend from India, Pradeep Modi.  He sells fashion bags designed by his wife Preeti Modi.  He sells in small quantities, normally one of a kind bags, to Harrod's and other fashionable outlets worldwide.

Aside from Pradeep's stall and the Philippine section, I saw very little of the rest.  Perhaps I was able to see less than 1% of the total display.  This place is  B-I-G and the products non-redundant!

Today is my last day in HK, I did city check-in already so I can cover the rest of the events today and have a smooth train ride to the airport later.

Blog EntryHong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2008Jul 10, '07 10:25 PM
for everyone

July 11, 2007, Hong Convention and Exhibition Center, HK - The Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2008 opened yesterday.  The ribbon-cutting ceremonies was graced by Mr. Fred Lam, executive director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Mr. Frederick Ma, Secretary of Commerce and Economic Development of the Government of the HKSAR, guest of honor, and Mr. Andrew Leung, Chairman of the HKTDC Garment Advisory Committee.

Mr. Leung reminded the audience that the fashion week would be all about "discovering what will be essential wear, cut, cloth, colour, style and look, come Spring/Summer 2008."

The Hon. Frederick Ma, added, "This is my first public function in Hong Kong after taking up the post and I am excited to find that it brings me the chance to work with innovative talents, top designers and premium manufacturers to contribute to one of the most important industries in Hong Kong."

The show has attracted a record 1,147 exhibitors from 19 countries and regions.  Seven group pavilions, from the Chinese mainland, India, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan, are taking part, as are first timers Russia, Spain and Turkey.

The participants from the Philippines included: A. Suarez Sterling Corporation, ABS Export International, Fina Ornamentalia Crafts, Ibarra Designs Ltd., Inc., La Cora Creatives, Inc., Michelis Inc., Sanara, Inc., Selections Export International, Sterling Gifts, Inc., Talimaya Gift-Fashion Accessories Corp., and Unijel International Trading, Inc.  The Philippine participation was organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM).

A most-stop for fashion professionals, the fair has introduced three new theme zones -- Infant and Children's Wear Zone, Emporium de Mode and Spice Arena -- to help buyers stay on top of trends and for ease of sourcing.  These three as in addition to the four popular zones: the Body and Intimate Wear Zone, Bridal and Evening Wear Zone, the Garment and Accessories Mart and Fashion Gallery.

Since my focus is to cover the fashion shows, today's high points for me are: Samuel Dong's Black and White, the Supreme Corea Artist Fashion Show I and to close the day, the Supreme Corea Artist Fashion Show II.

I missed the MA Graduation Fashion Show 2007 by the Institute of Textile and Clothing of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University which was staged yesterday at noon.  I was able to cover though the Cecilia Yau and Peter Lau Spring/Summer Collection 2008 by Jezz Company Ltd., Let's Twist Again by Ika and Grace by Bernard Foong.

Cecilia Yau showed an impressive collection of dreamy, romantic gowns in a palette of pastels, all in classic style, with a surprise ending of brilliant colours.  Peter Lau surprised the audience with quirky mini-dresses, puffball skirts, mandarin collars and lacey shorts.  He used old-fashioned prints and vivid colours.

I will comment of the collections of Ika and Bernard Foong on my next blog; and post my pictures when I am back in Manila since the computers here in the Press Center do not have a CF card reader.  Lessons, lessons, lessons . . .

" . . . it is not good to look at what is not licit to desire." - St. Gregory the Great, Moralia, 21, 2, 4 (PL, 76, 190).

This last page of Gregory's Moralia are importantly self-revealing, almost confessional.

Gregory, Moralia 35.20.49 (Latin version also available)

"Now that I have finished this work, I see that I must return to myself. For our mind is much fragmented and scattered beyond itself, even when it tries to speak rightly. While we think of words and how to bring them out, those very words diminish the soul's integrity by plundering it from inside. So I must return from the forum of speech to the senate house of the heart, to call together the thoughts of the mind for a kind of council to deliberate how best I may watch over myself, to see to it that in my heart I speak no heedless evil nor speak poorly any good. For the good is well spoken when the speaker seeks with his words to please only the one from whom he has received the good he has. And indeed even if I do not find for sure that have spoken any evil, still I will not claim that I have spoken no evil at all. But if I have received some good from God and spoken it, I freely admit that I have spoken it less well than I should (through my own fault, to be sure). For when I turn inward to myself, pushing aside the leafy verbiage, pushing aside the branching arguments, and examine my intentions at the very root, I know it really was my intention to please God, but some little appetite for the praise of men crept in, I know not how, and intruded on my simple desire to please God. And when later, too much later, I realize this, I find that I have in fact done other than what I know I set out to do. It is often thus, that when we begin with good intentions in the eyes of God, a secret tagalong yen for the praise of our fellow men comes along, taking hold of our intentions from the side of the road. We take food, for example, out of necessity, but while we are eating, a gluttonous spirit creeps in and we begin to take delight in the eating for its own sake; so often it happens that what began as nourishment to protect our health ends by becoming a pretext for our pleasures. We must admit therefore that our intention, which seeks to please God alone, is sometimes treacherously accompanied by a less-righteous intention that seeks to please other men by exploiting the gifts of God. But if we are examined strictly by God in these matters, what refuge will remain in the midst of all this? For we see that our evil is always evil pure and simple, but the good that we think we have cannot be really good, pure and simple. But I think it worthwhile for me to reveal unhesitatingly here to the ears of my brothers everything I secretly revile in myself. As commentator, I have not hidden what I felt, and as confessor, I have not hidden what I suffer. In my commentary I reveal the gifts of God, and in my confession I uncover my wounds. In this vast human race there are always little ones who need to be instructed by my words, and there are always great ones who can take pity on my weakness once they know of it: thus with commentary and confession I offer my help to some of my brethren (as much as I can), and I seek the help of others. To the first I speak to explain what they should do, to the others I open my heart to admit what they should forgive. I have not withheld medicine from the ones, but I have not hidden my wounds and lacerations from the others. So I ask that whoever reads this should pour out the consolation of prayer before the strict judge for me, so that he may wash away with tears every sordid thing he finds in me. When I balance the power of my commentary and the power of prayer, I see that my reader will have more than paid me back if for what he hears from me, he offers his tears for me."

I have been thinking about this matter and came across the above article of Wayne Cosshall which echoes my sentiments.
